Want to Help?

from Amy Olson, my counterpart at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, about the impact of the catastrophic flooding on KY libraries:

We know that Knott (water was up to the middle of their door) and Perry County public libraries were flooded.  Another county lost their roof and no word yet on the inside structure.  Quite a few counties have flooding in their basements or minor flooding in general.  Again, they’re still waiting to get inside to see all the damage.  One director lost their car.  Basically as time progresses we’re learning more.

A big loss was at the Hindman Settlement School (not a library): Hindman Settlement School - Appalachian Writers' Collection. The archives of the school have been damaged, although the extent of the damage is not clear at this time. Flooding also compromised the writers' library collection housed in the May Stone Gathering Place building. This small study library consisted of historic and new regional works, including signed copies of the works of James Still.   https://hindman.org/    Many (if not all) the buildings here were hit hard.

If you are interested in contributing to relief efforts, Amy sent this link from the KY Governor’s office: teamekyfloodrelieffund.ky.gov and some information from the Family Resource and Youth Services Coalition of Kentucky on how to support the EKY flood relief and recovery effort through supply donations or monetary donations. You can review these options on the Kentucky Education Association’s website:
