Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting 2022: Archives and Sustainability 

Call for Proposals 
The 2022 Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting will be held on Friday, May 20, at the beautiful Columbus Metropolitan Main Library in Columbus. The plenary speaker will be Kathleen Smythe, professor, Xavier University department of history.

The Society of Ohio Archivists is (planning) to return to meeting in person in Columbus, Ohio for its 2022 annual meeting! This year we welcome proposals that explore the theme of Sustainability as it relates to sustaining the projects, people, and ideas that drive our field as well as how we respond as a profession to environmental sustainability.
The committee welcomes submissions relating directly to the theme, along with a broad array of other topics.
Session, poster, and discussion proposal topics can address a broad array of topics, including, but not limited to:
  • Steps to continue or build on grant-funded projects
  • Succession planning
  • Projects or initiatives that redefine your institution’s role in preservation or memory work
  • Project management best practices, experiences
  • Successful efforts/resiliency measures that focus on sustainable practices for archival operations
  • Longstanding institutional projects that express a commitment to environmental sustainability
  • Presentations that address questions like:
    • What collection resources do we have in Ohio to support Climate Change research?
    • How can archivists respond to the demands of Climate Change?
    • How can we advocate for environmental justice using archives?
  • Collections storage: how do we balance “best practices” with “best for the earth?”
  • Advocacy and outreach efforts using archives to increase public awareness in the area of climate change and other threats to the environment
  • Disaster planning
  • Engaging in archival outreach with STEAM programs
  • Management and preservation of scientific research data
  • Diversity, access, inclusion, and community archives
  • Current and forward-moving tools for archival discovery, maintenance, and/or marketing
  • Outreach and instruction that employs creative or adapted methods, or addresses complex topics
  • Transformative student, intern, and volunteer experiences and projects
The Program Committee encourages proposals of panel sessions, student and professional posters, as well as alternative formats such as a debate, fish bowl, lightning, mini-workshop, pecha kucha, world café, and other session formats that encourage interaction between presenters and attendees. Please see the proposal form for more detailed information about alternative sessions.
Proposals must include:
  • Session/Poster title and type
  • Abstract of 250 words describing the session/poster and how it will be of interest to SOA attendees
  • Description of 150 words for the printed program
  • Contact information for the primary presenter and any other participants
  • A/V or technology requirements
  • Any additional special needs
Proposals will be evaluated on interest, creativity, relevance, diversity of content and speaker representation, and completeness of proposal and presenters. The Program Committee also encourages proposals from students, new professionals, first-time presenters and attendees, individuals from related professions, as well as those from outside the state of Ohio.
