Public Libraries Study
On November 29th, you will receive an email message from “Public Libraries Study” (LibrariesStudy@osumc.edu) inviting you to participate in an anonymized online survey to understand how your library system is responding to the ongoing opioid crisis. This study of Ohio public libraries and the opioid crisis is being led by Dr. Janet Childerhose at The Ohio State University, in partnership with the State Library of Ohio. Dr. Childerhose is a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She conducts research on the opioid epidemics in the US and Canada.

I would like to encourage you to complete this survey. It should take approximately 10 minutes of your time to read the consent form, and 10 minutes to complete the survey. Your input and perspectives will help the OSU to identify resources and support needs of Ohio public libraries in responding to opioid activity, and to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected your system’s ability to respond to this crisis. We anticipate the study will highlight the important work that Ohio’s public libraries do in managing this problem and identify challenges that libraries face.

You will also have an opportunity to participate in the second part of the study, which is an interview that will take place in early 2022. You will see the option to participate towards the end of the survey and can indicate if you are interested in being contacted.

You can learn more about the study here. Study findings will be posted as they become available.

Thank you for your time and participation.

Sincerely,
Wendy Knapp, State Librarian
State Library of Ohio

New Toolkit
The ALSC Summer/Out-of-School-Time Learning task force has created a new toolkit: Learning Beyond: 21st Century Summer and Out of School Time Programs for Youth. The toolkit is intended to elevate best practice, support the research, and assist in the training of library staff to deepen their engagement with youth in the summer and out-of-school time. It can assist library staff in developing more equitable approaches to summer reading and learning, as well as out-of-school time programming, that is based on research from youth development specialists, equity and diversity leaders, and STEM educators.
