From the State Library

A preliminary 2021 Ohio Summer Library Program evaluation report is available for download. A fuller report, including anecdotes and analysis from Ohio librarians, will be available by year’s end. The pandemic’s impact continued to be felt as librarians adapted programming for outdoors and online. For most, participation numbers in reading challenges and at programs and events was still way off from pre-pandemic numbers. But statewide, participation in SLP was well over 50% of pre-pandemic numbers. We are getting there! And, more libraries than ever before were Summer Food Service Program sites in 2021. Regardless of conditions, Ohio libraries make summer healthier, more fun, and better for their communities.

2021 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award voting is open until November 10. Buckeye Book Award voting takes place online at www.bcbookaward.info. There is a button for students to vote directly, and a button for teachers and librarians who collect student votes and wish to submit them in bulk. Lists of the nominated titles in each grade band are on the student and teacher/librarian ballots. All these titles were nominated exclusively by Ohio students!

Nominations for the Buckeye Book Awards are open year-round. Ohio students may nominate their favorite new books anytime here: bcbookaward.info/nominate/
Any books first published in 2020 or 2021 that are not part of a series that has previously won the award are eligible for the 2022 awards. Encourage children and teens to nominate as many books as they want and to get their friends to nominate too! The more nominations a book receives, the better its chances for making it to the final list. Teachers can also submit nominations received from their students.

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards is Ohio’s readers’ choice book award program for students in grades K-12. It was established in 1981 and is a collaborative project of the Ohio Educational Library Media Association, Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts, Ohio Library Council, the Kent State University School of Information, and the State Library of Ohio.

Monday begins a new month. As you welcome in November, consider posting a note on your social media or newsletter to remind families with young children about the Day By Day Ohio Family Literacy Calendar at DayByDayOH.org. This perpetual calendar features songs, activities, book suggestions, and videos for every day of the year. Day By Day Ohio offers resources to further develop early literacy skills and improve school readiness.

Day By Day Ohio, a service of the State Library of Ohio in collaboration with Ohio Ready to Read, also includes literacy and health information and an Ohio public library locator map. It is available anytime, anywhere and requires just internet access and a computer, smartphone, or mobile device.
