From the State Library

Applications for the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Mentoring Program have opened. This program connects children’s services professionals together for approximately 10 months to help them build peer-taught skills, make connections, and increase familiarity with ALSC’s Core Competencies. The program is supported by ALSC’s Managing Children’s Services Committee, the ALSC Membership Committee, and staff.

To apply as a prospective mentor or mentee:
www.ala.org/alsc/publications-resources/mentoring/apply
Please note that ALA/ALSC membership is NOT a requirement for mentees.

New this year, the Friends of ALSC will fund up to 50 one-year ALSC and ALA memberships to individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color who are also interested in participating in the ALSC Mentoring Program as either a mentor or a mentee. Prioritizing ALSC's BIPOC members will further support ALSC’s strategic objective of increasing the intentional recruitment of a diverse membership, while reducing barriers to participation and access to leadership development opportunities. If you are interested in applying for this membership funding opportunity, please submit a mentoring program application first and then complete a membership funding application

Applications for both the Mentoring Program and BIPOC Mentoring Membership Funding close on Monday, October 11, 2021.

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is pleased to announce its 2022 program with the all-ages theme of Oceans of Possibilities, featuring artwork by Sophie Blackall.

This year, each Ohio public library is receiving the CSLP manual online as part of the statewide purchase of CSLP manuals. Your library’s access code and instructions are on the attached note. If you have multiple branches/locations, please share these instructions with branch staff. This code can be used throughout your library/system.

(Note: This email will be re-sent in early January and possibly in early March as well. We know from last year’s experience that this announcement arrives very early for many libraries’ planning schedules, and that it’s very easy to lose track of an email!)

CSLP membership and manuals are provided at no cost to Ohio public libraries. This service is supported in whole by Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA funds granted through the State Library of Ohio. Ohio public libraries are under no obligation to use CSLP themes or materials, but are free to use these themes and materials to plan summer library programs and for programming throughout the year.

The manual is available now and you may start using it. Additional resources are added to the online manual throughout the winter and spring, including programming manuals and artwork from past years, and Oceans of Possibilities user-created resources such as posters, reading logs, activity books, program outlines, etc.

The CSLP catalog of publicity items and incentives is available now and orders may be placed anytime at shopcslp.com. In addition to incentives and publicity items, the CSLP manual is available for purchase from the catalog in paper and USB formats. Purchases from the catalog are at the library’s discretion and are the library’s responsibility.

Please review the CSLP Rules of Use. Public libraries may use CSLP artwork and slogans on all paper items created in-house or through other vendors. Libraries are also no longer restricted in how long they may use CSLP artwork, and CSLP now retains ownership of all art provided by the artists for its programs. You can use current or past (2018-2021) CSLP artwork for your SLP or any other programming throughout the year, now or anytime in the future.

The Ohio Summer Library Program website (library.ohio.gov/ohio-summer-library-program) offers:

  • Links to resources, toolkits, recordings, and ideas on outreach, summer learning, and more
  • A collection of research and best practices on the Benefits of Summer Reading Programs
  • The Regional Library Systems’ workshop schedule and registration links (when available)
  • Any statewide SLP incentives (when available)

Starting in June 2022, the Ohio SLP website will also link to the 2022 Ohio SLP evaluation. If you wish to note it now, the link will be www.surveymonkey.com/r/slpeval2022. All libraries are requested to complete the evaluation at summer’s end. We use your feedback to determine future needs, improve statewide supports, and communicate the benefit of summer reading programs to stakeholders.

If you are not subscribed to the Library Youth Services mailing list (LYS), a link to subscribe is on the State Library Youth Services page (library.ohio.gov/youthservices) under “Additional Resources.” Here is a direct link to the LYS list subscription page. This list is the distribution center for continuing education events, SLP news, statewide programs, grant opportunities, and other new information for youth services. All updates to CSLP resources and rules are posted to the LYS list. The LSTA Summer Library Program Grant opportunity will also be announced on the LYS list. Any Ohio library may apply for this grant.

Children and teens who participate in summer library programs benefit from engaging activities which promote literacy development and student learning and are pleasurable and fun. Summer library programs for all ages enhance lifelong learning and provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. The State Library is proud to support libraries in this endeavor. Resources for your 2022 SLP may be dependent on public health conditions. If you must again adapt your SLP plans to accommodate prevailing safety practices and requirements, the CSLP and State Library staff will assist and support you.

If you have any questions, please contact Janet Dwyer at jdwyer@library.ohio.gov.
