From the State Library

The 2021 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards voting period begins today, September 1 through November 10. Buckeye Book Award voting takes place online at www.bcbookaward.info. There is a button for students to vote directly, and a button for teachers and librarians who collect student votes and wish to submit them in bulk.

Consider setting up a display of Buckeye Book Award nominated titles as well as past winners, reaching out to teachers, and posting to your social media to encourage students to vote.

Lists of the nominated titles in each grade band are on the student and teacher/librarian ballots. All these titles were nominated exclusively by Ohio students!

Nominations for the Buckeye Book Awards are open year-round. Ohio students may nominate their favorite new books anytime here: bcbookaward.info/nominate/
Any books first published in 2020 or 2021 that are not part of a series that has previously won the award are eligible for the 2022 awards. Encourage children and teens to nominate as many books as they want and to get their friends to nominate too! The more nominations a book receives, the better its chances for making it to the final list. Teachers can also submit nominations received from their students.

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards is Ohio’s readers’ choice book award program for students in grades K-12. It was established in 1981 and is a collaborative project of the Ohio Educational Library Media Association, Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts, Ohio Library Council, the Kent State University School of Information, and the State Library of Ohio. It is one of the few readers’ choice awards in which exclusively students (not adults) make all the nominations as well as vote for the winners.

Thank you to everyone who has completed the 2021 Ohio Summer Library Program Evaluation survey! Surveys are in from 130 Ohio public libraries. Please join them and share your results and feedback by completing the survey:
www.surveymonkey.com/r/slpeval2021

Each year, the State Library asks all Ohio public libraries to report on their SLP. Your participation helps the State Library, Regional Library Systems, other partners, and the Collaborative Summer Library Program to provide helpful resources and support for future SLPs. It also gives us the information we need to communicate the value and impact of summer programs and activities provided by Ohio public libraries.

This evaluation survey asks you to submit these numbers:
  • Children, teens, and adults who participated in your SLP
  • Attendance at SLP-related programming for children, teens, adults, and all-ages. Online live, online recorded, and in-person programs are counted together for this survey.
  • Statewide incentives distributed (State Parks, Armstrong Museum, Ohio Renaissance Festival) (if applicable)
  • Number of Summer Food Service Program sites operated/visited (if applicable)

You may also provide feedback on SLP resources provided by CSLP, the State Library, Regional Library Systems, and other partners, and make suggestions for improved or new services.

The survey can take as little as ~5 minutes if you have your numbers ready at hand, longer if you have narrative feedback to share. In 2020, the average time spent on the survey was just under 15 minutes.

This survey also invites you to share anecdotes and photos from your SLP. These photos and stories may be used in the annual Ohio SLP Evaluation Report, and in presentations, print, and/or online publications that communicate the importance of libraries for summer enrichment and literacy support.

Please complete the evaluation by September 10. I will send additional reminders.
Contact me if your systemwide statistics will not be compiled until end of September.

Thank you in advance for collecting your data and completing the survey. Summer reading and learning have a big positive impact on student success and community well-being. Your survey response lets us demonstrate the range and benefits of summer programming in Ohio’s libraries, particularly during this transitional year, and helps us continue to improve our services.

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training was purchased by the State Library in 2019 and was recently renewed for another year (access through August 2022).  Subsequent archived webinars are now available as separate modules in Niche Academy.  The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is now available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.

A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

To access the training, go to the State Library of Ohio’s Training and Professional Development page and click the homelessness training link.  Once in Niche Academy, you will be prompted to create an account. Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.
