Empowering Your New Customers to Save You Time and Money
Program Date: 03/17/2010
Program Time:9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Speaker:
Cheryl Gould has been a training consultant for Infopeople since 1996. She has delivered workshops on a wide range of topics including: Increasing computer competency, search skills, Training the Trainer, Mastering Tough Public Service Situations and Cutting Edge Customer Service Techniques.
Program Description:
If your library is like others all over the country, you are seeing increasing numbers of new customers. These new customers are first time users or returning to the library after a long absence. With loss of jobs, revenue, or property as motivating factors, they may be coming into your library with a high level of anxiety and potentially unrealistic expectations. Add these ingredients to your existing base of customers--those attending storytimes, participating in book clubs, asking reference questions, placing and picking up holds, and needing assistance with circulation concerns--and you have a recipe for stress for staff and customers alike.

This workshop addresses the human side of libraries as resource centers in hard economic times. With more customers than ever using public access computers and needing assistance, empowering new library customers to become self sufficient is a win-win situation. Empowered customers are less likely to get defensive or frustrated which reduces stress and saves staff time in dealing with difficult situations. In addition, if customers learn to self serve around a task that happens multiple times a day, many hours of staff time per week can be saved.

This all-day workshop will provide opportunities to look at ways that customers can self-serve and provide practice working with customers so they feel empowered. There will be time to develop customized responses to common customer requests and look at tools to support self service including handouts, audio, video and screencasts. The instructor will provide practical, useful tips that can be applied immediately to start saving time in a typical day.

Meals: Choice of Vegetarian sandwich or Turkey sandwich
Audience: For all public service staff

Dealing with Difficult People:Why and Who??
Program Date: 04/08/2010
Program Time:2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Speaker:
Linda Bruno has been helping people grow, both professionally and personally, for over 10 years. She works with libraries, universities, Chambers of Commerce, corporations and other organizations to help them nurture their most valuable resource their employees.
Program Description:
Chances are, you have dealt with a difficult person at some point in the past (maybe today??). It doesn't seem to get any easier, does it? With the tips you learn in these sessions, you may never consider it "easy," but you will begin to understand why they behave the way they do - and after all, it's the behaviors we find difficult, isn't it?

This session explores why we should even bother understanding the people behind difficult behaviors. We delve into the "intent" behind those difficult behaviors to see why one person is likely to exhibit a specific behavior, while someone else acts totally different - and still annoys us! If you've ever wondered if a certain person got up this morning intending to aggravate you, this session will answer that question! (Hint: the answer is "no, probably not!") .

This is part one in a three part series. You do not have to attend all of them.

How to Problem Solve, Manage & Lead with Powerful Questions
Program Date: 04/14/2010
Program Time:10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Speaker:
Ned Parks, New Directions Learning & Development
Ned harnesses his passion for helping others by conducting humor-filled, motivational leadership sessions, keynote speeches, and workshops on the challenges of everyday life. He encourages each person to examine their potential, goals, values and beliefs to determine areas of strength and opportunity.

But Ned takes things one step further He gives participants tangible ideas they can use as soon as they leave the event.

Program Description:
The children's librarian walks in your office looking for help with a scheduling conflict. Renovations have started in her normal room and now she is double booked in the community room with a citizens' group.

As the manager what do you do? If your first instinct is to solve the problem, answer her question and move on, think again.

While this may be the most expedient solution, is it the best? You have just accomplished several things you don't want.

  1. You have trained the employee to come to you with their problems instead of solving them on their own, increasing your own workload long term.
  2. You have taken away the chance for the employee to grow in their own problem solving skills.
  3. They just might have had the best solution to the problem and you missed it.

Through the use of properly sequenced and well-constructed questions you can solve the problem at hand while at the same time empowering the employee to build their own problem solving skills, confidence, and lessen organizational workload.

During this webinar you will learn:

  • The 4 types of questions.
  • How to construct questions to get the maximum information.
  • How most questions stop the flow of information, shut down the conversation, create conflict and how to stay away from them
  • Learn the techniques to develop your own library of questions.
  • Get sample questions to get you started.

Spring Membership Meeting --CHANGE is NOT an Optional Event!
Program Date: 04/20/2010
Program Time:11:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Speaker:
Pam Schuck ,is the Founder and President of STRIV=E Training, an organization aimed at motivating clients to focus on building a culture of service excellence, no matter the sizes of their business, that gives them THE competitive edge.

Others have said this about Pam.
On behalf of the Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce and the programming committee, let me express our amazement for your recent presentation. The evaluations came back with many excellent marks and requests for more Pam and anything Pam presents. - Rob Felber, Programming Chair, Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce.

Program Description:
Change is NOT an Optional Event

One of the biggest deterrents in work and life that effects our attitude is change. Change is not an optional event. Change is something we need, although we most often do not like it. Change causes disruption, excitement, distress, and sometimes crisis. It brings uncertainty and transition. Change is NOT a choice - it happens. How should we think of and define change? Most of us naturally resist change, yet to survive today, we must be able to expand our knowledge, fine tune our skills, and manage our jobs and lives more effectively. Change is not an optional event and we must learn to expect change and adapt to it by applying a positive attitude. Service excellence is dependent on positive attitudes in the work place. Personal excellence is dependent on positive attitudes in life. Positive Attitudes can provide courage and fortitude to resolve problems, take action, and create a workplace of energy and enthusiasm. You must practice positive attitude every day! You must choose to UP YOUR ATTITUDE !

Learn to advocate and embrace what change can do FOR us, instead of TO us! Learn to anticipate, adjust, and look forward to Change Observe, predict, and be familiar with change and much more.

You will also hear updates from NEO's staff.

In the second session, we will address several of the most common difficult behaviors - along with what NOT to do if you want your interactions with them to be effective. And along the way, we'll also discover the best ways to deal with those behaviors.

This is part two in a three part series. You do not have to attend all of them.

Program Date: 05/07/2010
Program Time: 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Speakers:
Dandi Daley Mackall, author of teen favorites Crazy in Love, Eva Underground, and Love Rules. Her newest just-released book is My Boyfriends Dogs. Books for tweens include Larger-Than-Life Lara, A Girl Named Dan, and her Winnie the Horse Gentler and Starlight Animal Rescue series.
Laura Solomon, OPLIN
Kristina McBride, a new author from Ohio, whose book The Tension of Opposites,
Program Description:
YSS has always been a two-day event, but in the light of library budget cuts, we are going to have just a one-day event in two locations to save costs and mileage.

Our one-day workshop will focus on literature, programs, and social networking to further help us reach our tween and teen patrons. There are many definitions for tweens - we are focusing here on children ages 10-12 and for teens, ages 13 up. For this workshop, we aim to hit both groups - for example, our keynote speaker has written for all ages, and even her teen books have been described as "clean."

Keynote speaker is Dandi Daley Mackall, author of teen favorites Crazy in Love, Eva Underground, and Love Rules. Her newest just-released book is My Boyfriends' Dogs. Books for tweens include Larger-Than-Life Lara, A Girl Named Dan, and her Winnie the Horse Gentler and Starlight Animal Rescue series. However Dandi is the author of over 400 books for children and adults, and is a frequent guest on radio and television talk shows.

In addition, we will have Laura Solomon from OPLIN speaking on ""How Tweens and Teens Are Using Social Networking, and How Libraries Can Use This for Their Advantage," and also some "Best Practices Programs" for tweens and teens.

Closing speaker will be Kristina McBride, a new author from Ohio, whose book The Tension of Opposites, is already receiving favorable buzz.
