Program Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Richard Harwood, Founder of the Harwood Institute is the driving force behind the Institute’s partnerships with some of the largest, most respected non-profits in the world. Even in partnering with groups such as United Way Worldwide, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, American Library Association, and AARP, Rich has been dogged in maintaining the Institute’s nimble core staff, while dramatically expanding access to this work. By focusing on impact and not funding, he has created new ways to support small individual groups and the hardest hit communities. He continues to be a leader in how we can think about moving communities and the country forward, through his books such as: Hope Unraveled, Make Hope Real, Why We’re Here, and The Work of Hope. Increasingly, people across the country and around the world have access to Harwood ideas, innovations, and approach.

Maureen Sullivan, president of the American Library Association .is a widely recognized leader and educator in the library profession. Her career has included positions as the human resources administrator at two major research libraries; a consultant and trainer with the Association of Research Libraries; a member of the faculty in the Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions PhD program at Simmons College and in one of the annual institutes sponsored by the Harvard Graduate School of Education; and several leadership positions in the American Library Association, including service as the president of two if its divisions.
Program Description:
In today's neighborhoods, education and information have taken on a whole new look. Faced with internal crises including declining budgets, shrinking resources and, in some cases, even closed facilities, school and public libraries have struggled to stay strong and to stay focused on those they serve.

Now, it’s time to turn outward and work together!

As experts from the Harwood Institute, an organization that has studied American society for decades, tell us, The key to having greater impact in your community and staying true to yourself is to turn outward. When we turn outward, we make the choice to face toward the community, to squarely address reality and to see and hear all people!

On September 24, 2013, school and public librarians from communities throughout Ohio will gather in Columbus to attend Libraries Turn Outward. There, they’ll learn how, by working together, we can build stronger learning communities – together!

At this program funded in part through an Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio, attendees will see how:

  • School and public libraries nationwide have worked creatively together to fill critical learning gaps.
  • Businesses and funders have stepped up to offer financial support for learning.
  • Professional organizations have facilitated collaborations and training to modernize skills.
  • Library communities, working together, have met the challenges of the day by keeping our commitments to access, service and knowledge.

Harwood experts remind us, Each day, we make hundreds of choices, and while we can’t control everything, if we become more intentional about the choices we do make – we can have a far greater impact and take more control of our own work and lives.

Make the choice to attend Libraries Turn Outward!

Each attendee will receive a copy of the Richard Harwood's most recent book, The Work of Hope.

Sign up today, the program is limited to 100 attendees.

Soft Skills for Strong Management: Cultivating Good Critical Thinking
With the challenges and demands supervisors continually face each day, it is essential to possess great critical thinking skills. It is also important to instill such soft skills in your employees so that they can handle the daily demands of their jobs. But what exactly are these crucial abilities? And better yet, why are they important and how can they help us in this ever-changing library environment?

Critical thinking is an overarching skill that helps you succeed in many facets of your professional and personal life. Characteristics like open-mindedness, good decision-making, the ability to be self-aware, and the capacity to adapt in the workplace are all tools that are driven by good critical thinking.

We will define what the concept of critical thinking is and explore several of the associated tools mentioned above. We will then investigate these soft skills and learn ways we can immediately improve them so that we can become a more conscious and efficient critical thinker.

Managing Generations in the 21st Century
Program Date: 05/16/2014
Program Time:Please ignore the date above this is an archive available anytime
Speaker:
Sherry Dardin, Business Coach
Program Description:
For the first time in history, there are four generations in the workplace at the same time. Each of these age groups has different expectations and different demands, and employers who cannot recognize these will lose their best employees and see their workplaces in turmoil.

Managing Generations in the 21st Century will teach you how to "Gen-Blend" or move into another generation's comfort zone. Do you remember the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?" The golden rule would be great if we were all the same generation. But because people are different they need to be treated differently. This is the basis for what we call Gen-Blending, operating in another generation's world. Treat them as they want to be treated. Gen-Blend out your comfort zone into theirs.

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics, attitudes, and values of each generation
  • Identify specific actions a manager can take to coach, motivate, and get results from each generation
  • Determine how your management approach may need to change when coaching, managing and retaining employees of different generations
  • Discover ways to Gen-Blend in order to solve generational problems in the workplace

Time Management: Yours and Theirs
Program Date: 06/13/2014
Program Time:Please ignore the date above this is an archive available anytime
Speaker:
Linda Bruno has been helping people grow, both professionally and personally, for over 10 years. She works with libraries, universities, Chambers of Commerce, corporations and other organizations to help them nurture their most valuable resource their employees.
Program Description:
As a new supervisor, the first thing you may have noticed is that it appears there is simply too much to do to ever get it all done! Never fear ~ there are tips and techniques that can help you manage the workload, manage your time, and help your employees manage their time, too.

First on the list is delegation, which can be a lifesaver for the new supervisor. Do you have a system for delegating or do you just hand tasks to the first person walking by? When you learn to delegate effectively, you are better able to manage your time. The real benefit, though, is that you’ll not only be managing your own time, but you’ll be helping your employees manage theirs too. That helps create a motivating environment where employees are encouraged to learn and grow.

In this workshop, we’ll also discover some of the obstacles that tend to keep us from managing our own time – and what we can do to overcome those obstacles. Are you a procrastinator? You’ll discover how to overcome that procrastination – and when you shouldn’t even try. Do pesky interruptions take up the bulk of your day? Are you a victim of “marathon meeting madness”? There is help for each of these time-robbers – and the benefits will compound when you help your employees in these areas, too.

We’ll end this fast-paced session with several practical tips that will help keep you on target in managing your time and theirs. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to be a more effective supervisor!

Speaker:
Sherry Dardinis founder and owner Hundredfold Return, Inc, a Dallas-based company. The company was founded in 2005 to offer a multitude of training and consulting services exclusively for the non-profit sector including strategic planning and professional development. The company also offers business coaching, consulting, and a full menu of interactive training.

Sherry comes from a family of educators, so offering training was a natural transition from her corporate career to her training career in 1999 where she wrote 4 classes and taught them on line for Wilbur Wright City College in Chicago, Illinois.

Program Description:
Believe it or not, you don’t have to do everything. It really is possible to have multiple work priorities and deadlines without letting them run your whole life. Here are few questions to ask your self:

* Are you finding yourself doing things over that you gave someone else to do?
** Are you adding 2 or more tasks for every one getting done?
*** Do your meetings seem to run late and off course?

In Part 2 of this interactive and fun webinar series you’ll learn skills that will help you effectively prioritize and identify “procrasti-killers” that can save hours each day.

Participants will learn and begin to master:

  • Assure what your delegate gets done and done correctly
  • Show you how to run efficient and productive meetings
  • How to get meetings to start — and end — on time, while staying on course

Getting Organized YOUR Way! Series: Part I of III
Understanding Your Organizing Personality
Program Date: 01/10/2015
Program Time:Please ignore the date above this is an archive available anytime
Speaker:
Linda Bruno has been helping people grow, both professionally and personally, for over 10 years. She works with libraries, universities, Chambers of Commerce, corporations and other organizations to help them nurture their most valuable resource their employees.
Program Description:
Chances are you have read articles or books on becoming more organized in 32 seconds or less , or something that unreasonable. Maybe you’ve even tried some of those techniques – but they not only left you unorganized, but also feeling like you had failed.

Here’s a secret you really need to know - there really are no “one-size-fits-all” rules for becoming organized – isn’t that a relief??

In “Understanding Your Organizing Personality,” Part 1 of this information-packed webinar series, you’ll learn about what you can do to be more organized, not what “they” say you should do!

We’ll begin by finding out who you are “organizing-wise.” Your “organizing personality” determines to what degree you will be successful in using certain tips and techniques you may have heard about becoming organized. It also helps you decide which tools – and rules – you should use to stay organized. Do you like everything out in the open? You can still be organized! Do you like to have a place for everything and everything in its place - but sometimes lose track of things? There are ways to help – and this session will give you the knowledge you need to get on the right track.

Program Description:
The words we use impact the quality of service delivered by library staff. Some words (words to use) satisfy customer needs and wants, connecting us to customers in meaningful ways. Others (words to lose) are negative, destructive, and disconnect us from customers. This webinar reveals the importance words have on our interactions with both internal and external library customers. The session is library focused and offers specific examples of how ‘words to use’ can help library staff members be more effective in dealing with real-life everyday customer situations.
